Hearing tips for the holiday season

After a long year, the holiday season is once again upon us. Even though this is often an exciting time for catching up with friends and family over meals and drinks, it can also be an especially difficult time if you’re dealing with hearing loss.

If you have a hearing loss, noisy, crowded rooms can be a big challenge. During the holidays, these scenarios become more common, so don’t let your hearing loss leave you with feelings of frustration.

Follow these hearing tips and have a merry Christmas.

It’s all in the seat

When choosing your seat in a crowded situation, such as a dining table or lounge area, some spots are better than others.

Arlene Romoff, co-founder of Advocates for Better Communication and author of Listening Closely: A Journey to Bilateral Hearing and Hear Again: Back to Life with a Cochlear Implant, suggests picking the seat best suited to your hearing ability.1 Determine your ‘better hearing side’ and aim to sit in a position with that side facing toward those you are trying to hear, assuring you can still see the faces of the people you’re speaking to.

Ask the host to turn down any background noise (such as music or television) and strike up a conversation with someone with a sense of patience.

Spend some one-on-one time

Romoff also has a great tip about holding a conversation with just one person. She suggests finding a quiet corner away from loud chatter, such as the kitchen. It’s also likely there will be children around, so she suggests reading them a story in a quiet room — you’ll be a favourite of all the parents who want a little time out, and the kids will love you for it!

Get a checkup

If you struggle to hear people in crowded rooms and think you might need to be checked by a professional, don’t hesitate to talk to an Audika hearing care expert. They will assess your hearing needs and offer personalised advice and information on hearing health.
