Looking beyond hearing aids

Hearing allows us to connect to our family, friends and the world around us. As we age our hearing can gradually deteriorate - this is a natural part of the ageing process. Hearing aids can be a solution when managing hearing loss however, there are some people with significant hearing losses who struggle to hear even when wearing hearing aids. In cases like this your hearing care expert may consider referring you to an implant clinic.

Types of hearing implant solutions available

Bone conduction implants

A bone conduction implant is an alternative option to a conventional hearing aid. This implant takes advantage of bone conduction – transmitting sound directly to the cochlea, bypassing the outer ear and middle ear. This implant also consists of two components; the first is surgically implanted into the mastoid bone behind the ear and the second is a sound processor that connects to the internal component.

Cochlear implants

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that consists of two components. An internal electrode array which is surgically implanted into the cochlea and an external sound processor. The external component picks up sound and passes it to the internal component. Cochlear implants bypass the damaged part of the cochlea and stimulates the auditory nerve directly.

How do I know if a cochlear implant or bone conduction solution is right for me?
