What a hearing test involves

On the day of the test

On the day you are welcome to bring a loved one or friend with you. The hearing test takes place in a sound-proofed room or cubicle, taking about 60 minutes where you will wear a set of headphones. The test usually involves 4 easy steps:

  • The clinicians will start playing sounds that start at a bass tone and work up to treble tone. They will ask you to push a button when you hear each sound.

  • Each time you press the button, the clinicians will plot your results which will enable them to ascertain your hearing range.

  • Once your type and degree of hearing loss has been determined, your clinicians will be able to recommend a solution that you will need.

  • They may then show you a range of instruments appropriate for your individual hearing loss and recommend what they feel is right for you.

After the conclusion of the hearing test, the clinician will examine your ears to see if there are any signs of obstruction such as wax or an infection, which may be causing some of your hearing loss.

Consultation

As part of the consultation the clinician will also ask you a few questions to understand your hearing loss and needs, such as:

  • Where and when do you feel your hearing is challenged the most?
  • Do you have special needs relating to your lifestyle? Are you especially active?
  • What are your concerns about hearing loss and wearing hearing aids?

The clinician will then provide you with their recommendation depending on the test results and your answers to the questions surrounding understanding your hearing loss.

If the clinician recommends that you need a hearing aid, you do not have to be concerned as hearing aids have become lighter and more discreet, with a range of colours and styles to suit your hearing health needs.

Recommendation
